Carefully Thailand Vacation: Rules have changed, you could be jailed for doing this on beach

Carefully Thailand Vacation? Having dreams of the pristine beaches there and you having fun. Well, here is something you need o know first. Thailand government is all set to ban smoking at beaches after massive amount of cigarette buds were found in the sand. The Marine and Coastal Resources Department has said those caught violating the law facing up to a year in prison, according to BBC.

The department chief Jatuporn Buruphat said the ban will be imposed at around 20 beaches early next month. The decision was taken after consulting Thailand’s Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Gen Surasak Kanchanarat.

Mae Pim, Laem Sing, Bang Saen, Cha-am, Khao Takiab, Bo Phut, Haad Sai Ree, Patong, Pattaya, Jomthien, Koh Khai Nok and Koh Khai Nai are among the 20 beaches where smoking will be banned. The Marine and Coastal Resources Department said in a recent survey of it was found that anything between 63,000 to 138,000 cigarette butts on a 2.5-kilometre stretch of Patong Beach were retrieved.

The survey was conducted by the Andaman Coastal Resources Research and Development Centre. Based on a sampling survey of a 9-square-metre area to a depth of 10 centimeters, the figure was estimated. On violating the ban, there is a provision of one-year imprisonment or a possible fine of up to 100,000 baht ($3,000), as per BBC.

Jatuporn Buruphat has said, “We won’t totally ban smoking but we will set aside smoking area for smokers before they reach the beach. They can drop their cigarette butts there but they will not be allowed to stroll on the beach while smoking,” Asia One reported. He added that the department would soon expand the ban to cover every beach in the country
